Statewide rental subsides and service supports for single adults who are high–cost Medicaid participants, chronically addicted, and homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Services include intensive case management, job development and counseling services and clinical supervision of direct service staff. Capital and operating funding for crisis or step–down service units with 24/7 on–site support.

• NYSSHP provides operating funding for supportive housing programs that serve homeless persons with disabilities such as mental illness, chemical dependency, and/or HIV/AIDS.
• Policies and procedures for ongoing performance development of staff appropriate to staff roles and residencelevel.
• These may include non–certified housing alternatives with supports as well as other evidenced based models and partnerships in housing alternatives.

In Massachusetts, sober homes and recovery residences are different models for substance abuse recovery. Recovery residences —formerly known as halfway houses — are licensed residential treatment programs, while Massachusetts sober homes are peer-led and do not provide treatment. Sober homes provide mutual support, emphasize independent living skills, and depend on peer leadership. They are not licensed and are not funded by the state. Vanderburgh House Operators are the largest providers of MASH Certified sober houses in Massachusetts. We work closely with MASH to develop standards and ensure that our sober houses offer the strongest community and recovery environment in service of our residents.

Evidence that residents’ recovery progress and challenges are recognized and strengths are celebrated. Policies and procedures that promote resident-driven length of stay.

We are active from the local to the state level, continuously advocating for the rights of sober home residents and operators. Vanderburgh House and MASH Certified Sober Houses in Massachusetts

Stays limited to 7–28 days. Transition (e.g. entry, phase movement and exit) rituals promote residents’ sense of belonging and confer progressive status and increasing opportunities within the recovery living environment and community. Sober homes support various abstinence-based pathways to recovery, and each residence focuses on one or more particular pathway. All MASH sober homes meet national standards based on the National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR) model. 29.d Documentation that residents are formally linked with the community such as job search, education, family services, health and/or housing programs.

Certified sober homes have comfortable spaces for living, sleeping, and engaging with peers, all of which make them valuable and safe spaces for recovery. In Massachusetts, state agencies and vendors are only allowed to refer clients to MASH Certified sober houses.
